First & foremost . . . I LOVE everything . . . including Mike & Erik, especially Mike! I’m sure you know what kind of gold you have here with these two! They complement each other well, Erik is the people person, his positive attitude is just the lift Mike needs. Mike has SO MUCH knowledge behind him, makes me enjoy his gruffness even more. My impression – right or wrong is - he was wronged so many times before that he is just waiting for the ball to drop again, instead of enjoying the process. Their banter back and forth is delightful! You know you have happy employees when they just burst out in song and it was BOTH of them singing, not just Erik. LOVE THAT!
My house will be way to quiet when this project is over. They are also extremely hard workers. Outside of lunch there was not even a break unless Leslie stopped to give them something or tell them something. They arrived by 7:30 and didn’t leave until after 5 – definitely not of the union mentality. Not only are they enjoyable to work with, but they are focused on the project, they are funny, creative and extremely hard working.
So . . . observations . . . there are many parallels between your business and mine, only the projects I manage are IT related, instead of construction / remodel - but the same concepts apply. I work with guys like Mike and Erik all day long and I work with customers that can be high maintenance. There are always issues that pop up in a project and flexibility is key to success. My favorite customers are the ones that actually want to partner with the guys and not dictate (or even demean them during the project), I think the entire process goes so much better when you are partners. For years we have been trying to better align our business to become ‘trusted advisors’ to our customers and not just implementers. We spent TONS of money bringing in experts to talk to our teams about developing relationships with customers so we become their ‘go-to’ company. It took a LOT to get this concept into the heads of our sales team (who prior to this just wanted to sell widgets and make their money). Times are changing and no longer is the big money on the product or software sale, now the money is in implementing the new technology and there are a lot of companies for the customer to choose from who do what we do. Most of the sales team are finally embracing the concept and are more successful because of it.
YOU have the understanding of how important the ‘trusted advisor’ piece is inherently – or at least you give the appearance it comes natural to you. On my side the sales people have become more successful because of their training, but the idea hasn’t filtered over to the engineering team yet. That long lead up brings me to my revelation this week . . . as the glass guy stood in front of us and asked a question, both Steve & I turned, in unison, to Mike for his thoughts. Whether or not he wanted to become a ‘trusted advisor’ it automatically happened. It might not be totally willing or a conscious effort on this part, but Mike has taken on that role (and I can tell you Steve does not trust many people, for him to turn with me to Mike, means Mike won him over these last few weeks). The suggestions Mike has made along the way have been fantastic, invaluable . . . you know I will want him on every job I do going forward. I want to just keep him, move him in the spare room. Because you are so aware of things, I’m confident you already know all I’m telling you but THIS GUY IS FANTASTIC! Erik helps Mike in a lot of ways (work and others). You have the perfect pairing. I just love when Mike comes to talk to me (I really have been doing my best to not bother them during the day – I know you have a ton of other places for them to be and I don’t want to slow anything down) – but when he comes to say, ‘how about this?’ or ‘did you think about that?’ I couldn’t be more grateful. So, for your business, the philosophy of being the trusted advisor HAS filtered down to your people – great to see! Not sure if you bonus your teams, but these two . . . they deserve one!
Wait until you see their work! The first day the tiling started, Leslie popped in so I peaked in, and was speechless. If I didn’t have to jump back out for a conference call I would have been in tears and now that the tile is in and ready for grouting I just stand in the doorway and marvel at how talented they are. Not only are you my trusted advisor, but your team follows your lead and steps up during your absence.
